LUMS graduate wins Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year award

21 November 2012

The Grand Old Duke of Pork, a start-up business founded by recent Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) graduate Paul Hodges, has been awarded the title of Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year at the University Student Enterprise Awards.

The innovative business lets customers choose and design new sausage-flavour combinations from a selection of 50 fresh locally sourced quality ingredients. These are then created by the Grand Old Duke himself and delivered straight to their door.

Paul had the idea while he was a final-year student on the BA in Management and Entrepreneurship degree at Lancaster University Management School. Previously he spent a year on Placement within the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development who support SME businesses at LUMS.

Paul says that gaining practical insights into the reality of small business management and having access to a wide range of entrepreneurs, inspired him to start the company once he had graduated.

He set up the business with a £1,000 grant provided from the Proof of Concept Fund in association with Lancashire County Developments Ltd. He also received mentoring support provided through the Northwest Enterprise Champion project, part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

On receiving the award Paul commented:

"It’s good to get the recognition. I always wanted to set up my own business and things like this make the hard work worthwhile."

The awards evening held at LICA celebrated Lancaster's high-flyers and designer Wayne Hemingway MBE, creator of global fashion brand Red or Dead, was the guest of honour.

Other awards included; Placement Student of the Year (Anna Kiukkonen, nominated for her placement with Brighbeck), Student Enterprise of the Year (Avinash Nandwani for Cheeky Promotions Ltd) and Social Entrepreneurship Idea of the Year (Elham Kashefi for the Tara Project).
